Ataúro, 12-15 August 2025, Finally the Association of Fisheries and Marine East Timor (APM-TL) has finalized the research project that received funding from the National Institute of Science and Technology - INCT to conduct scientific research on "Economic and Economic Impact" of Community-Based Marine Protected Areas (MPA) on Artisanal Fisheries Communities in Beloi and Ilimano” continues the second phase of research conducted in Ataúro, Beloi District, Beloi Village.
The main objective of this research is to examine and provide scientific evidence that reinforces the importance of community-based MPA management as a sustainable strategy for marine conservation and fisheries development in Timor-Leste.
Data collection process/methods
This research adopted a mixed methods approach. The quantitative component focuses on ecological surveys that use Baited Underwater Video (BUV) techniques to assess fish abundance, species diversity, and reef condition.
Underwater Visual Census (UVC) and Habitat Assessment to collect ecological data and information, especially marine biodiversity.
While the qualitative component conducted a survey and applied a questionnaire with structured questions to conduct interviews with local communities and fishermen about the socio-economic impact in the Marine Protected Area.
The combination of these methods provides a comprehensive assessment of the MPA, ensuring that both ecological and social factors are considered.
The results of this research are expected to provide scientific evidence to support or evaluate the effectiveness of community-based conservation approaches to serve as a basis for policy elaboration by governments and NGOs in marine resource management. It also encourages and strengthens community advocacy for sustainable marine management in Timor-Leste.
