Project Finalization

The Association Fisheries and Marine Timor Lorosa’e (APM-TL) has finalized its final project on “Investigating the Ecological and Socio-Economic Impact of Community-Based Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in Artisanal Fishing Communities in Beloi and Ilimano” which is the full funding accommodation from INCT to support this research.
General Objectives:
This study specifically examines the effectiveness of community-owned Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on the sustainable fisheries sector in Atauro Island, and Ilimano. Additionally, it
investigate economically significant fish species targeted by artisanal fisheries in Timor-Leste.
Specific Objective:
- To assess the ecological benefits of MPAs on fish biodiversity, focusing on species with high economic value for artisanal fisheries in Timor-Leste.
- To analyze the socio-economic impact of MPAs on local fishing communities.
- To challenge the lack of opportunity for MPA implementation for the community.
- To recommendations for scaling up housing MPA initiatives
In the near future this study will be officially published on the Instituto Nacional de Ciências e Tecnologia - INCT website and can be opened to the public for access. And in this final study outlines the ecological and socio-economic impacts of the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that are located in Tara Bandu in Beloi and Ilimano.
Beloi MPA showed significant ecological recovery, evidenced by higher fish manager abundance, diversity, coral cover, and benthic assemblage, along with a strong one for fishing and tourism benefits under traditional Tara Bandu rules.
In contrast, the established Ilimano MPA reported lower ecological indicators and perceived community in need. The findings emphasize the of sustainable application and community involvement for ecological and socio-economic development. This study advocates for the integration of ecological monitoring with economic solutions and promises all analyzes to guide effective and sustainable MPAs in Timor-Leste.
